show artist's statement
It's about moving around, which I've done a lot. I've lived in 31 different houses in 15 different towns in my life. And I noticed, especially when moving across cultures, that there's a lot of stuff you can't take with you. Not just things you have, but things you learned, ways of thinking, expectations, etc. So you have to relearn those things. The most interesting part is that when you go back to where you were before, you find some of those things are still there, and you can think the old way and use what you used to know. However, it's also obvious the old home isn't the same. Quite a lot is missing. There are spaces where these things used to be, in between the familiar things. And in those spaces there is evidence of what used to be there, overgrown or left empty. I have memories of places that don't exist anymore, or are not at all what I remember. But it's all still "home". So in the big picture, moving is not so much moving from on place to another, but more a kind of growing into another place. A Bigger Home.
